Adventure 3: Cathedral of the Madeline
The Cathedral of the Madeline has been a fixture in Salt Lake City since 1909, but the first Catholic parish was established in 1866. This place is a must see for anyone coming through, or living in SLC. Mostly because I don't think most people expect such a credit to a catholic structure in the city that's almost 40% Mormon. It's the only Roman Catholic cathedral in town. They have regular musical performances that are open to the public. Oh, and maybe I should have said this first... it's beautiful.
Here's a sneaky shot of mass. I didn't know if I was allowed to enter in the middle, and who wants to be the girl walking to a bench in the back with the clunking of her shoes disrupting everything?
To the right of the vestibule (lobby) is this room full of flickering candles, statues, and stained-glass windows themed blue.
The acoustics in this place unreal. The performance I attended of the Utah Chamber Artists was captivating. Some of the harmonic vocals were haunting, and sent chills through my scalp. I didn't get close-ups in the church proper, but the pipes from the organ jut out over the congregation from the rear, and that's the funkiest touch. Don't forget to look up as soon as you walk in.
Here are some shots of the exterior.
